Q: What kinds of puzzles are included?

Puzzle types change throughout an adventure. The Society of the Thirteenth Key includes: Pattern recognition, Maps and coordinates, Visual evidence, Codes, Logic, Classification, Observation, Deduction, Memory, and Source comparison. The puzzles are designed to feel like part of the investigation rather than unrelated worksheets.

Story & Seal is a serialized mystery experience for readers ages 8–13.

Over the course of an adventure, your child follows a story through physical correspondence, examines clues and evidence, solves puzzles, and uses the Story & Seal Case Portal for short interactive moments that keep the case moving.

The goal is simple: make reading feel less like something they have to do and more like a mystery they want to solve.

Is Story & Seal a book?

Not exactly.

There is a complete story at the heart of every adventure, but it doesn’t arrive as a traditional book. The narrative unfolds chapter by chapter through letters, evidence, puzzles, and other story materials.

Your child reads the story while also investigating it.

Is it a game?

Partly—but Story & Seal is story-first.

Puzzles, clues, decisions, and interactive moments give your child an active role, but they all serve the larger narrative. The experience is designed to feel like following a mystery rather than completing a series of unrelated activities.

The goal is to inspire reading by gamifying the experience.

Does my child need to remember things from earlier chapters?

Sometimes—and that's part of the fun. Clues, objects, answers, and details from earlier chapters can become meaningful later in the story. Readers are encouraged to keep their materials and pay attention to what they discover along the way. The Case Portal also keeps track of story progress and relevant digital case materials.

Do my child's choices change the story?

At selected points, your child may be asked to make a decision about what a character should investigate or do next.

Those choices can influence how the next part of the story begins while still keeping every reader connected to the same larger mystery.

So your child has meaningful agency without accidentally choosing a path that prevents them from completing the story.

What if my child gets stuck?

Getting stuck is allowed. Staying stuck isn't the goal. Progressive hints are available. Parents can also access help through an account dashboard.

What happens if my child enters the wrong answer?

A wrong answer does not erase their progress.

The portal can offer additional guidance and allow them to try again.

Once a chapter is successfully solved, that progress is saved and the appropriate story reveal becomes available.

Are the puzzles educational?

They build skills—but that isn't how they are presented to the reader.

Story & Seal puzzles naturally use observation, reading comprehension, logic, inference, pattern recognition, persistence, and critical thinking.

To your child, though, the objective is much simpler:

Solve the case.

What comes with each chapter?

Every dispatch centers on the next physical chapter of the story.

Depending on the chapter, the letter may include things such as:

Story correspondence
Maps
Photographs
Evidence
Coded messages
Puzzle materials
Case documents

The exact contents change with the mystery because the artifacts are part of the story itself.

How often does a new chapter arrive?

Story & Seal is designed around an ongoing dispatch schedule, twice monthly.

However, the next dispatch does not get scheduled until the previous puzzle is solved. So if you happen to go away for vacation, the story doesn't progress without you, it will pick up whenever you are ready to continue.

That break between letters also gives young readers something increasingly rare: a reason to look forward to what happens next.

Why not send the whole story at once?

Because anticipation is part of Story & Seal.

Instead of finishing an entire experience in a weekend, your child gets time to think about the case, revisit clues, make/compare theories with friends that are on the same adventure, and look forward to the next chapter.

The wait isn't filler.

It's part of the story rhythm.

Is Story & Seal a subscription?

Can I pause an adventure?

Accepted Answer

The adventure is set up to go at your pace. The next dispatch only gets scheduled when the most recent dispatch puzzle is answered in the Case Portal. So you can wait as long as you need, and when you are ready to continue you can answer the puzzle and the next letter will be scheduled for the following fulfillment day.

Which age track should I choose?

Accepted Answer

Age is a useful starting point, but you know your reader best. Choose between Ages 8–10 and Ages 11–13.

Does my child need to be a strong reader?

Story & Seal is designed to motivate reading rather than test reading ability.

That said, it is still a story-driven experience, so readers should be reasonably comfortable with the selected age track or have an adult available to read alongside them.

Can we read the story together?

Absolutely.

A child can investigate independently, work alongside a parent, or read portions together as a family.

The important part is that the young reader still gets room to make observations, form theories, and solve.

Can siblings solve the same mystery together?

They certainly can collaborate on a story at home.

However, Story & Seal also includes individual progress, personalization, puzzle states, and story choices, so the best experience may be for each reader to have their own case.

Can two children have separate Story & Seal adventures in the same household?

Absolutely! You can have children on different tracks, or the same track. There is no limit to the amount of Investigators per household.

What is the Story & Seal Case Portal?

The Case Portal is the digital companion to the physical story.

Your child uses it at specific moments to continue the case without turning Story & Seal into a screen-based experience. They enter their portal by tapping a phone to the Access Token or scanning the QR code on their dispatch.

Depending on the chapter, the portal may:

Check a puzzle answer
Offer hints
Reveal new evidence
Play audio
Show an interactive scene
Save story progress
Offer choices on what happens next
Add case materials to a digital file
Unlock the next stage of the adventure

The physical letter and puzzle come first. The portal supports the story rather than replacing it.

How much screen time is involved?

Story & Seal is screen-light by design. Most of the experience happens through reading, handling physical materials, studying evidence, thinking, and solving. The Case Portal is used in shorter bursts when the story calls for it—for example, checking a solution, uncovering a new piece of evidence, listening to a recording, or making a decision. Then the reader returns to the physical case.

Does my child need their own phone?

No. The digital portion of Story & Seal is designed to be accessed using a compatible household device.

A parent or guardian can provide the phone or device when the story calls for a portal interaction.

What happens to the Case Portal after the story ends?

The Case Portal will remain active and used in their next story. It becomes a vault of all of their successes, and as future stories weave in characters and locations from previous stories, they will be able to cross reference information that may help them solve a puzzle.

What is the Access Token?

The Story & Seal Access Token is a reusable NFC token that connects the physical adventure to the Case Portal.

It is approximately one inch in diameter and is designed to stay with your Story & Seal materials across the adventure.

Think of it as a physical bridge between the letters and the digital case.

How does the NFC token work?

Accepted Answer

When the story directs your child to continue in the Case Portal, they tap the Story & Seal Access Token with a compatible NFC-enabled phone.

The token directs the device to the appropriate Story & Seal digital experience.

There’s no need for the token itself to contain personal story information.

Do we get a new token with every chapter?

No. The token is a reusable part of the Story & Seal system.

What happens if we lose the Access Token?

Don't worry—the story won't end because a token went missing. You can always scan the QR code on the dispatch and that will take them to their portal.

What if my phone doesn't support NFC?

We want to ensure the experience is accessible to anyone, no matter their mobile device. If the phone is not NFC capable, you can access the portal by scanning the QR code on the dispatch. You can also access your child's portal via your account dashboard.

What is the Parent Dashboard?

The Parent Dashboard is the adult-facing side of Story & Seal.

The account dashboard includes:

Child's progress
Current chapter status
Dispatch information

Can I see whether my child is making progress?

Yes, you will see where they have progressed in the story, as well as the status of upcoming dispatches.

Can parents see the puzzle answers?

In your child's progress section, you can access the answer to the current puzzle they are working on.

Will the Parent Dashboard spoil the story for me?

No, we do not reveal any upcoming narrative information in the dashboard, aside from puzzle answers.

Is there advertising in the Portal?

No. The child-facing Story & Seal Case Portal does not contain third-party advertising.

Does my child need to create an account?

No. A parent or guardian manages the customer relationship.

Does my child need to share anything publicly?

No public sharing is required to progress through a Story & Seal adventure. The mystery is private to the reader and their family.
